Some folks have never used a message board before, and might find it a little bit different to their typical email lists or whatnought.
Per Ankh designed KemetOnline to be an online community, where people can interact with each other, have discussions with each other, compare notes, argue and debate, sell/barter things, and make recommendations. As such, a message board is better suited to creating community than a simple email list.
