An interesting thing that happened to me new

Em hotep, all
*bow*

Okay, maybe it's not hugely interesting, but I found it somewhat amusing, and maybe you will too.

My job recently required that I work at a convention that we put on. So for five days we stayed at (since I probably shouldn't name names) a very, VERY posh resort in Palm Beach. With the 60-foot high vaulted ceilings that made you feel like you were walking into the Sistine Chapel - literally, there was art on the ceilings. Amazing place.

Well, I poked around in our room, and sure enough, there was a Gideon Bible in one of the nightstands. In a moment of ignorance, I took a comment card and, while having mostly good things to say, ended with a rant about "Why a Bible? There are many religions in this world, some not based on Bible!" Oops.

As one of my co-workers reminded me, those Bibles are donated. Perhaps, she suggested, I could get together with my local organization and have them donate something. I politely agreed.

But can you imagine? Even if we had the funds for it, which I doubt we do, exactly how would this conversation go? "Hello, may we interest you in 240 copies of the Egyptian Book of the Dead?"

Am I the only one that finds this idea funny?

Senebty,
Lou

Interestingly, the last time I stayed in Arizona, the hotel room had a Book of Mormon, but no Bible, You know you're out west when...Sadly, some one wrote in the inside cover about how Mormons were a cult and that I should read the Bible instead. So at least you were polite.

It is kind of silly, but it's because it'd be like, "Can we interest you in 240 copies of Harry Potter?" Simply because it's so tangential to the essence of our faith. It's an important book, but not a "representative guide" to our faith. It's one of the prime divergences between KTR and the Big Three, should you ever fall into attempting to compare them directly (which is exceedingly hard to do. it's like trying to compare apples and oranges and deciding which one makes a better carburetor for a truck). While we take our information about the practices of our faith from texts, we are not a "scriptural" religion, which is to say, we do not have a "holy book." We have sacred texts, but nothing as identified as the true and inerrant and complete word of deity.

So the bigger question is then...how do you inform people about your faith without a handy-dandy brochure to give them? And more significantly, what do you hope to accomplish by doing so?

Well, yeah, I was kind of wondering about that. I mean, I've seen talk of expanding, setting up new temples, but realistically, that's not going to happen because (a) we'd have to start proselytizing and (b) no one would take us seriously. So it seems that we will need to be content with letting things go the way they naturally will, and if that leads to more people in our faith, great, but we probably shouldn't hold our breath. Strictly my opinion, of course...

Senebty,
Lou

Right now, we seem to be in kind of a hibernation phase (being unable to get the new site up or teach classes), and still there are people who are finding us.

However, we've always taken a bit of a long view for things. Better to do it slow and right than have it grow fast and implode.
