Em hotep, everyone! <bow>

Rev Renee and I are creating a website for Carl, where people can post their memories and stories about him, and we can list his books, etc. We're having a problem doing this because we keep crying, we keep missing him, we keep kind of not believing he's really gone. And yet at the same time we keep telling ourselves, "Well, Carl would want us to move on."

Today we looked at each other and Rev Renee said, "No, he wouldn't. Carl wouldn't want us to be okay yet." And we both burst out laughing because it's so true. He had a high regard for himself in a sometimes unobtrusive way, and he really wouldn't want us to be okay yet.

It's a great thing when you can laugh and cry at the same time and remember someone you've loved with great fondness and also recall that there were ways he was and is a jerk.

Rev Sedgwick

And Rev Sedgwick ..he wasn't obnoxious...just....

well

aware of how amazing and brilliant he was....and he definely was pleased when people recognized it

You might have noticed how unable we have been to say much of substance on this one . Even doing the rites for him has been really hard. Carl was not of our faith (he was baptist) but without him and his inspiration our faith would not exist.

Friends, we talk about respecting different faiths. And also how there really is often more connection between people with a similar approach to faith then those within the same faith. Most people are not flexible enough thinkers to BOTH have a clear strong focused commitment and ethic and yet one with the sort of breath and humility (a very funny term to say in the same breath as Carl Vaught or any of his doctoral students) that recognizes the limitations of your thought and language.

Carl knew nothing about Ancient Egypt African American Thought or African traditional religions when I started my dissertation ..... by the end he not only knew the material but could see where it could be helpful in his own work .

And he really really cared about his students. In some ways he was VERY political. We knew we had a lion to protect us from departmental politics and such....BUT in another way he was so apolitical it is realy unusual

This apoliticalness showed up around faculty searches. Most faculty worked hard to get someone ideologically aligned with THEM. Disagreement on core issues could easily result in an no vote regardless of how good the candidate. Not for Carl...a no vote meant he simply did not think you were that smart LAUGH

If you were really smart and cared about students (he may have _said_ a good teacher but I am not sure --he is from a very different time in the academy our focus on teaching just was not there in the same way) and also, hopefully a tad bit eccentric then he would be interested even if you stood in polar opposition to his approach and philosophy.

Luckily the two things-- brillianc eand eccentricity seem to go together. They sure did/do in Carl

Best
