Em hotep, everyone! <bow>
What's in my mind right now is what cabin attendants say in their pre-flight briefing: put your own oxygen mask on first, and then your child's. As counterintuitive as that can feel, I think it's exactly right. We can't be of any help to anyone unless we are able to function.
So, what are we all doing to help us function, and function well? I can tell you some of the things I'm doing.
I'm being especially loving toward Rev Renee--sometimes I'm grouchy, because that's how the feelings come out from time to time--but I've got an increased tenderness and warm care in my heart/mind right now.
I am taking extra-good care of our cats: True Blue, Thomas Merton, Francisco, Duncan, and Lyon. The herbal medicine guy suggested that a little cooked sweet potato every day would be a good support for their immune systems, and they're getting that sweet potato every morning and every evening. I'm cleaning their boxes more often than usual. And we are both hugging and kissing and petting them even more than usual. Lyon, in fact, has been attending my live seminars, sending odd messages to my students during our discussions.
I have called with my parents, just to hear their voices and let them know I'm happy that we are in one another's lives.
Rev Renee and I have agreed that we will take our teenaged niece Audrey to see a stage play; she asked if we would do that, and it sounds like something wonderful for all of us.
I am neither knee-deep in the news nor avoiding it. That balance is often hard to maintain, but I'm doing pretty well.
I am continuing to do my work: teaching as well as I can, writing as well as I can.
We are finding ways to have fun, even small things like French toast with berries at Perkins, or going to a different Barnes & Noble for a change.
We are taking care of our health. The present situation makes it harder to sleep, so we are sometimes up at odd hours of the night; but we make sure to get enough sleep. We eat pretty well. We drink enough water. We go outside into the air as much as we can. I hang laundry in the sunshine. I fill the birdfeeders and the birdbath.
I am finding and consolidating our important documents so that in an emergency, we could grab them and go.
And we cut ourselves a little slack, recognizing that these are trying times and that the feelings take a toll on time and energy.
That's my list. What is yours?
