Greetings
I have read the things that people have said about Set and I'm not sure where that all fits into the Asar drama. If we understand things in principle then Set is a collection of human characteristics to be overcome in order to readdress the imbalance caused in the existance of Man through the action of Set. Therefore it would suggest that we have to constantly do battle with those characteristice, envy & greed, hatred, malice to name a few in order to actulise our true Divinity. Time has run out on me until such time, peace be with you

Despite his reputation of being a god of chaos, evil, and storms, Set has some good qualities. For example, as a god of the desert, he protects desert caravans as they travel through the desert. He is also said to protect the barque of Ra as it travels through the underworld at night.
As others have pointed our, even “destruction” has its place in nature. Storms and fires are necessary for the survival of plants and animals in certain environments.
Even the desolation of the desert has its beauty.

Set isn't evil. He's misunderstood. Yes he went a bit nuts with jealousy and killed his brother and tried to kill his nephew and tried to rape his brother's wife, but that doesn't make him evil... that didn't come out right. -.-0
He had a large following (and still does) due to his strength. He is the strongest of all the gods and because of that it’s his task to protect Ra from Apep.
He's actually quite kind when he comes to you (as long as you don’t piss him off). He speaks gently and once you get to know him he's wonderful company.

Im not sure what you mean by 'in principal' (perhaps logic?), but I think you will find that we're attempting to get to know Lord Set as more than a mere 'plethora of negative human emotions' or as a key, but side role in the Wesir mythos. Sure, He's perceived as the antagonist in that particular mythos, but He's known as a saviour in other's and we can all agree that He was certainly not left out of the A.E's worship practises, nor shunned as an 'evil' Deity. I find myself working on the premisis that Lord Set is a Deity, an integral part of the Ntr and Ennead rather than a 'personification' or scapegoat for our own perceived failings and faults It's been very difficult breaking out of the mindset I originally came to KOL with due to my christian backgrounds..
Reverend Sedgwick has written a short discourse on Lord Set you might find interesting.. if you follow the links from Living Kemet: Ancient Egyptian Religion (Open to all) >> Living Kemetic Religion(Public), You will find it under the heading "Set:Necessary Destruction. Third Day Upon The Year"
Thank you for your involvement in the discussion, your opinions were very thought provoking

Em hotep all ! <bow>
Good conversation here. Jen (Isians) suggestion to read the reflection on Set is a good one.
I had some difficulty appreciating Set myself. Rev Sedgwick never has understood why anyone would not think He is great.
One of the issues that came up here is Set's murder of Wesir and other activites from the myths.
First let's think about why these stories trouble us so.
I would suggest two reasons.
The bottom line is simply that a modern Western God doesn't behave that way. Read literally the myth suggests bad behavior on the part of a God and also conflict and disorder Among beings called Gods.
If you read the Ancient Myths like a fundementalist reads Christian Scriptures then Set is VERY hard to see as "godlike" or even "good".
So, rather than give a talk..how do we explain the Set Myths?
