The Rite

The Rite consists of several parts.
You need several items for the Rite:

  • Incense or essential oil.
  • Incese burner or oil diffuser.
  • Pitcher of water.
  • Two bowls -- one to receive water,
    one for offerings.
  • Candles.
  • Image or statue of your primary Netjer.

Step One: The Offerings

Light the candles.
Light the incense or light the diffuser for your essential oils.
Say over the incense or oil.

The fire burns; the fire shines
The incense burns; the incense shines
May this sweet smell come to you, O Netjer
As Your sweet smell comes to me.
May I be with You, O Netjer,
As You are with me.
May I live with You, O Netjer
As You live with me.
May You Love me, O Netjer
As much as I love you.

Step Two: Libations/Offerings

Take the pitcher of water, and as you recite each stanza of the following passage, pour water into the bowl.

I pour cool water for the akhu*,
Shining like gold in the vault of Nut.

I pour cool water for Wepawet
Who opens The Way for us.

I pour cool water for my Sebau**
Who guides us on The Way.

I pour cool water for Ma'at
who is The Way.

*akhu = The Blessed Dead
**Sebau = teachers

If you have any additional offerings, you may offer them to the Netjer at this point in the offering bowl.

Step Three: Henu

Perform full henu to the image of the Netjer.

Henu is where you hold your hands up to the Netjer. The hands are about head height, parallel to your shoulders, with palms forward.

Full henu is where you perform the henu gesture, drop down to your knees, and then touch your head to the ground.

Step Four: Complete the Offerings

Say to the Netjer

May these Offerings please You, O Netjer
May Your Ka be fed!

Step Five: Personal Time

Take some personal time to commune with Netjer.

During this time, you can remain quiet, do a meditation, say a prayer, hymn, or poem, whatever fosters your relationship to Netjer.

However, the most important thing is to simply be in Netjer's presence and to open your heart to Him/Her. There is nothing wrong you can do in this period.

Step Six: Closing

When you are ready to close, perform a full henu to the Netjer, and thank Him or Her.

  • Close the shrine.
  • Blow out the candles.
  • Back out of the temple. (Do not turn your back to the image of the Netjer.)

This is more commonly known as "Removing the Foot".
